Ukraine International Airlines Flight PS752 was destroyed shortly after taking off from Tehran on 8 January 2020, killing all 176 passengers and crew. The Boeing 737 was bound for Kyiv at a moment of severe military tension between Iran and the United States.

What happened

Iran initially attributed the crash to technical causes. Three days later, Iranian authorities acknowledged that Revolutionary Guard personnel had fired missiles at the aircraft after mistaking it for a hostile target. The admission shifted the disaster from an aviation accident to an international accountability case.

International consequences

Ukraine, Canada and other affected states sought a transparent investigation, compensation and legal accountability. The victims included citizens and residents of several countries, making cooperation under international aviation rules essential. The tragedy also intensified scrutiny of why civilian airspace had remained open during active military operations.

Why it mattered

PS752 became a defining case concerning civilian-airspace safety during conflict. It also produced years of diplomatic and legal action by governments and victims’ families seeking a full account of the chain of command and the decisions made that morning.
