TAIPEI, 23 October 2026 — Taiwan closed schools and offices and cancelled hundreds of flights as Typhoon Champi passed near the island with strong winds and heavy rain, the Associated Press reported Friday.
The storm had weakened from its earlier super-typhoon strength, but forecasters warned that dangerous conditions could persist as it passed near Taiwan’s northeastern coast.
Authorities reported one death and more than 170 injuries in storm-related incidents, while over 2,600 people were evacuated from vulnerable mountainous areas.
Residents in coastal districts were urged to avoid unnecessary travel and stay alert for powerful waves, falling objects and flooding.
Transport disruption extended to domestic and international aviation, while emergency teams monitored exposed communities and the risk of further damage.
Forecasters expected the system to turn north toward Japan’s southwestern islands. Officials continued to urge the public to follow local warnings as the storm moved away.
