The United States military has struck a vessel in the Caribbean that it said was operating along a suspected narcotics-trafficking route, killing three people aboard.
US Southern Command announced the operation in a statement but released few details about the vessel, the identities of those killed or the evidence linking it to trafficking.
Reuters said it could not independently verify the military’s account at the time of publication. No information was immediately available about recovered cargo.
The action forms part of an increasingly forceful US maritime campaign intended to disrupt organizations moving illegal drugs through the Caribbean and eastern Pacific.
Such strikes have generated questions about legal authority, identification standards and whether suspects could instead be intercepted, arrested and brought before a court.
Further disclosure will be needed to assess the target, rules of engagement and any coordination with regional governments whose waters or nationals may have been involved.
