The United States Federal Reserve is widely expected to increase its benchmark interest rate at its forthcoming policy meeting.

Financial markets have largely priced in a quarter-point rise, which would take the target range to approximately 3.75% to 4.00%.

Inflation readings have remained stronger than policymakers hoped, while oil above 100 dollars a barrel threatens to raise transport, production and household costs.

Chairman Kevin Warsh has repeatedly emphasised price stability and the importance of responding to signals from economic data and financial markets.

A rate increase would be the first under his leadership and could generate political tension during a year dominated by congressional elections.

President Donald Trump has publicly argued that the United States should have the world’s lowest interest rates, placing additional attention on the central bank’s independence.

Officials will also be closely watched for guidance on whether this move is a single adjustment or the beginning of a longer period of monetary tightening.
