Iran has claimed that its Revolutionary Guards struck the Togo-flagged oil tanker Trend in the Strait of Hormuz.
Tehran said the vessel attempted to pass through the strategic waterway without authorization under restrictions imposed during the regional conflict.
The incident marks a further escalation around a maritime route carrying a significant share of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies.
Iran has warned that ships attempting unauthorized transit could be targeted, increasing risks for crews, insurers and international energy markets.
Shipping has also been disrupted near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, where Houthi forces have expanded attacks on vessels linked to Saudi Arabia.
South Korea is considering a larger naval presence in the Gulf of Aden but has ruled out direct military involvement in the conflict with Iran.
Governments and shipping companies are assessing alternative routes and security arrangements as the two vital maritime corridors face simultaneous pressure.
