Senior economic officials from the United States and China are opening talks in New York on trade, artificial intelligence and critical-mineral supplies.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng are leading the discussions ahead of an expected summit between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping.

The meeting is intended to prepare limited agreements before the existing trade truce approaches its November expiration date.

Washington is seeking more reliable Chinese deliveries of critical minerals used in advanced manufacturing, defence equipment and clean-energy technologies.

The two sides are also expected to discuss artificial-intelligence safeguards, tariffs, investment restrictions and Chinese purchases of American agricultural products and aircraft.

Officials may examine gradual tariff reductions on goods considered non-strategic while retaining restrictions linked to national security.

Major breakthroughs are considered unlikely, but even modest commitments could reduce uncertainty for companies and prevent another escalation in the world’s most important trading relationship.
