Google has announced a €13 billion investment—about $15.1 billion—in artificial-intelligence infrastructure in Finland over the next two years.

The plan includes three data centres in northern Finland, where the cold climate can reduce the energy required to cool powerful computing equipment.

Google also signed a 22-year agreement to purchase as much as half the output from a nuclear power facility operated by Finnish energy company Fortum.

The agreement is Google’s first nuclear-power purchase outside the United States and reflects the rapidly growing electricity requirements of artificial-intelligence services.

Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo welcomed the investment, while officials said grid improvements, battery storage and additional clean-energy projects would accompany development.

The construction phase is expected to support economic activity, and the completed facilities could create thousands of direct and indirect jobs. Energy prices and environmental effects will remain closely watched.
