Competing maritime claims
The research ship operated with a naval escort as Turkey and Greece advanced different interpretations of continental shelves and the effect of islands on maritime boundaries. Greece placed its armed forces on alert, and European governments urged restraint.
The mission became the centre of a broader dispute involving energy resources, sovereignty and regional alliances. Turkey later extended the survey before returning the vessel to port. The confrontation demonstrated the danger of military incidents arising from unresolved legal claims.
