President Erdoğan announced on 21 August that the drillship Fatih had discovered a large gas reserve in the Tuna-1 well, later incorporated into the Sakarya gas field.

What happened

The discovery occurred in Turkey’s western Black Sea waters. Officials described it as the country’s largest gas find and set ambitious targets for bringing production ashore.

Why it mattered

Turkey imports most of the energy it consumes, making gas purchases a major component of its trade deficit. Domestic production could therefore improve energy security if reserves proved commercially recoverable.

Consequences

Further drilling revised estimated volumes and required pipelines, subsea systems and onshore processing facilities. The find became a central part of Turkey’s long-term energy strategy.
