Türkiye and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank have signed a cooperation agreement covering environmental investment, climate action and urban infrastructure.
The first phase is expected to mobilise approximately €400 million for projects in the Marmara region, according to Environment, Urbanisation and Climate Change Minister Murat Kurum.
Funding will primarily support advanced biological wastewater-treatment facilities intended to reduce pollution flowing into the Sea of Marmara.
The inland sea has faced repeated environmental pressure, including outbreaks of marine mucilage that damaged ecosystems, disrupted fishing and highlighted weaknesses in wastewater management.
The agreement was announced during a climate-finance gathering in Istanbul as Türkiye prepares to host the COP31 United Nations climate conference in November.
Officials presented the partnership as a step toward combining international finance with municipal infrastructure investment and longer-term marine restoration.
