What happened

The storm severely damaged Beira and affected communities across Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi. Rivers overflowed, roads disappeared and large areas became inaccessible.

Why it mattered

Hundreds of people died and millions required assistance. The disaster exposed the vulnerability of low-lying cities and rural communities to extreme weather.

Context and consequences

A vast humanitarian operation delivered food, shelter, medical support and cholera prevention while governments began long-term reconstruction.
