A drone has struck the Panama-flagged tanker New Andros in Iraqi territorial waters, adding to growing concern about the safety of commercial shipping in the Gulf.
The vessel was carrying approximately two million barrels of Iraqi fuel oil and was being used for storage under a charter involving the Iraqi Oil Tankers Company.
The impact caused a fire and minor hull damage, but officials reported no injuries among the 22 crew members and no leakage from the cargo.
Maritime authorities also received reports of other merchant vessels hit or disabled in the Gulf and Gulf of Oman during the same period.
Iran said it had attacked several ships in retaliation for US operations against Iranian tankers, while some individual incidents remained independently unconfirmed.
Repeated attacks could increase insurance costs, delay voyages and threaten energy supplies. Investigators will need to establish responsibility for each incident and assess any environmental damage.
