Pfizer and German biotechnology company BioNTech announced on 9 November 2020 that an interim analysis of their COVID-19 vaccine trial indicated efficacy above 90 percent among participants without prior evidence of infection.
Promising trial signal
The companies said the analysis was conducted by an independent monitoring board during a large randomized phase-three trial. They cautioned that safety monitoring and additional data collection were still required before seeking emergency authorization.
European scientific contribution
BioNTech developed the messenger-RNA vaccine platform, while Pfizer supported global trials, manufacturing and distribution. The result validated a technology that had not previously produced a widely authorized human vaccine.
Global significance
The announcement offered the first strong evidence that vaccination could substantially reduce symptomatic COVID-19. It also created logistical challenges because early formulations required very cold storage and global demand greatly exceeded initial supply.
