Russia formally recognized the Taliban government in Afghanistan, becoming the first country to take that step since the movement returned to power in 2021.

What happened

Moscow presented the decision as a practical move to expand engagement on security and trade. Many other governments continued to condition recognition on human rights, inclusive governance and treatment of women and girls.

Why it matters

The decision gave the Taliban an important diplomatic opening while increasing pressure on other states to define their policies. Recognition does not remove continuing international obligations or humanitarian concerns.
