Russian missile strikes on Kyiv killed five people and injured nearly 30 after a brief pause in attacks during a visit by United States envoys seeking progress in peace discussions.
City officials reported damage to residential buildings, a school, a clinic, a dormitory, warehouses and a television facility. Rescue teams searched damaged structures and assisted residents forced from their homes.
Ukrainian air defences intercepted several incoming weapons, but ballistic missiles remained especially difficult to stop. Officials also reported attacks and casualties in other regions of the country.
Ukraine’s foreign minister appealed to partners for additional interceptor missiles, saying current stocks were insufficient for sustained defence of cities and critical infrastructure.
Russia said its strikes were directed at military and logistics targets. Moscow and Kyiv continue to deny deliberately targeting civilians, although repeated long-range attacks have caused significant civilian deaths and infrastructure damage.
The renewed bombardment illustrates the gap between diplomatic activity and conditions on the ground. With front lines moving slowly, both sides have increasingly relied on long-range attacks to impose military and economic costs.
