The United States has pledged to help Kenya develop local processing capacity for critical minerals, placing the East African country within a widening global competition for strategic resources.

Attention is focused on the Mrima Hill deposit near Kenya’s coast, which is believed to contain rare earth elements and niobium with potentially significant economic value.

US officials said investment should emphasize transparency, community protections and value addition inside Kenya rather than exporting unprocessed material.

President William Ruto has presented the minerals sector as an opportunity to create skilled jobs, attract technology and build new industrial capacity.

Several companies and consortia are reportedly competing for roles in developing the deposit, but no final project structure or formal bilateral minerals agreement was announced.

Environmental safeguards, land rights and revenue-sharing arrangements will be central to whether mineral development produces durable benefits for nearby communities and the national economy.
