Americans marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks with memorial ceremonies in New York City, at the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Families gathered at the National September 11 Memorial as the names of the 2,977 people killed in the 2001 attacks were read aloud and moments of silence marked the timeline of the hijackings.
President Donald Trump attended the Pentagon commemoration, where 184 victims were remembered, while other current and former national leaders joined ceremonies elsewhere.
This year’s New York programme included recognition of people who later died from illnesses linked to toxic dust and debris released after the World Trade Center collapsed.
The anniversary also renewed debate about accountability, the long-term health consequences for survivors and responders, and the national-security policies adopted during the subsequent “war on terror.”
Volunteer projects, vigils and educational events were held across the country as communities reflected on a tragedy that reshaped American domestic and foreign policy.
