SOCHI — A sea-drone attack struck Russia’s Black Sea resort city of Sochi during the night, injuring eight people, according to authorities in the Krasnodar region.
Officials said beach infrastructure was partially damaged. Video reviewed by Reuters showed weapons fire and an explosion near the waterfront, followed by alarm among people in the area.
Sochi is a major tourism centre and hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics. The city also carries political significance because an official residence used by Russian President Vladimir Putin is located in the area.
Ukraine has regularly used long-range aerial drones against Russian military, energy and logistical targets. Maritime drones have been employed less frequently but have demonstrated their ability to reach protected Black Sea locations.
Ukrainian authorities did not immediately provide a detailed public account accepting responsibility for the Sochi incident. Russia has intensified attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure during the same period.
The attack illustrates the expanding geographical reach of the war and the growing exposure of civilian coastal areas. Independent information remains important for determining the intended target and full extent of the damage.
