Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has ordered an investigation after 37 detained miners died in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
Many of the victims were reportedly aged between 14 and 18 and had been arrested during raids on suspected illegal gold-mining locations.
The deaths sparked demonstrations and clashes in Minna, the capital of Niger State, leading authorities to impose an overnight curfew.
Security personnel used live ammunition as protesters attempted to attack government buildings, according to reports from the city.
The civil defence agency initially mentioned a possible disease outbreak but later said medical examinations would be needed to determine the cause of death.
Tinubu suspended senior officials, including the agency’s Niger State commandant, while families alleged abuse and extortion during detention.
Rights advocates are demanding an independent inquiry, preservation of forensic evidence and accountability for both the custody deaths and the response to protests.
