Turkey suspended the special consumption tax on diesel through August, providing temporary relief amid pressure on fuel-dependent businesses and households.
A targeted response to energy costs
The measure announced on 13 August was designed to reduce near-term transport costs at a time of volatile regional energy markets. Diesel prices affect freight, agriculture and public transport, so changes can quickly pass through to food and consumer prices.
Temporary tax relief can soften a shock but also reduces government revenue and does not remove exposure to exchange rates or international oil prices. The policy’s lasting effect therefore depends on market conditions after the exemption ends and on whether businesses pass savings to customers.
