The trade ministers of Turkey and Canada agreed in June to begin exploratory work toward a potential free-trade agreement.

Testing the scope for a deeper commercial relationship

Exploratory talks allow governments to examine market access, services, investment and regulatory questions before deciding whether to launch formal negotiations. The announcement signals political interest but does not itself create new tariff preferences.

A future agreement would need to address sensitive sectors and pass each country’s domestic approval process. For Turkish exporters, Canada represents a diversified market; for Canadian firms, Turkey provides manufacturing capacity and access to surrounding regions. The next milestone will be agreement on the scope and timetable.
