Turkey removed its opposition to a WTO agreement intended to make investment procedures more transparent and predictable in developing countries.
A compromise at the multilateral level
The decision announced on 26 March allowed efforts to advance an accord focused on administrative procedures, transparency and cooperation rather than traditional market-access obligations. Turkey had previously raised concerns about aspects of the arrangement.
Investment facilitation can reduce delays and uncertainty for firms, although outcomes depend heavily on domestic implementation and technical capacity. Ankara’s shift demonstrated how negotiated changes can unlock consensus in a trading system where broad agreements are often difficult to achieve.
